Altar Party
The Altar Party serves by assisting in the worship of God with care, reverence, and attention to the details of the liturgy.
The Altar Party serves the Church by assisting in the orderly, reverent celebration of the liturgy. Those who serve at the altar help guide the congregation’s worship through attentiveness, humility, and faithful participation in the prayers and actions of the service.
Members of the Altar Party may serve in several roles, including acolytes (torch bearers), the crucifer (lead server), and chalice bearers (also known as Licensed Lay Ministers). Acolytes and crucifers assist with processions, the handling of sacred vessels, and the flow of the liturgy, helping ensure that worship is conducted with dignity and care.
All who serve in the Altar Party must be confirmed members of the Church. Both men and women are invited to serve as acolytes and crucifers. The role of chalice bearer, however, is reserved for men who are at least 21 years of age and in good standing with the church. Those who serve as chalice bearers must be Licensed Lay Ministers, meaning they receive a license from the bishop to officiate at Daily Office services and may preach at the discretion of the Rector.
Serving at the altar is a ministry of responsibility and trust, calling for prayerfulness, reliability, and a desire to serve God and His Church with reverence and joy.
